January 24 – Five questions of sati

By | January 24, 2024

Dear Friends,

In Gregory Kramer’s book, A Whole-Life Path, he says he refers five questions to define sati, the word we translate as mindfulness.

Why am I cultivating awareness?
What am I aware of?
How am I cultivating awareness?
Where am I aware?
When am I aware?

He suggests finding a time for undisturbed reflective practice – alone or with a friend. “Present each question to the mind, and then pause. Let the alert silence do its work. Ask, then stop. Stop thinking, stop inquiring. Just let the tip of awareness rest on the tip of the moment. Don’t seek a definitive answer, but dwell with the effect of the question.” (page 256)

The chapter goes into more details on this, but maybe play with this today and see what arises, when you do this with curiosity and care.
