{"id":83,"date":"2016-01-15T06:00:42","date_gmt":"2016-01-15T12:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.grzesina.net\/meditation\/?p=83"},"modified":"2021-01-27T22:44:11","modified_gmt":"2021-01-28T04:44:11","slug":"2016-01-15-sounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grzesina.net\/meditation\/2016-01-15-sounds\/","title":{"rendered":"January 15 &#8211; sounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Friends,<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a quick stealth meditation you can do anywhere and any time, from Sharon Salzberg&#8217;s <em>Real Happiness at Work<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"uncited\">\n<div>As you sit down at your desk or work space, spend a few moments just listening to the sounds around you, and note your reactions to them.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>She has a brief guided sound meditation on her site (~2 minutes)<br \/>\n<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sharonsalzberg.com\/real-happiness-at-work\/\">https:\/\/www.sharonsalzberg.com\/real-happiness-at-work\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In <a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newharbinger.com\/mbsr-every-day\">MBSR Every Day<\/a>, Goldstein and Stahl explain how mindfulness can change our experience of more annoying sounds, like a horn blaring outside.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"uncited\">\n<div>The annoyance of those sounds doesn&#8217;t come from the sounds themselves; it comes from our interpretation of those sounds as &#8220;bad.&#8221; When we bring mindfulness to it, we shift our relationship from aversion to curiosity, allowing the sounds to rise and fall, lessening their negative impact.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If you want to do a longer meditation that includes sound, Goldstein and Stahl suggest starting with a narrow attention on the breath, then, after a few minutes, expanding to include sensations of the body, and then, a few minutes later, widening awareness to include hearing, noticing sounds appearing and disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>I have set up some preset timers on the <a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/insighttimer.com\/\">Insight Timer<\/a> app I use to include some interval bells to mark the different phases of breath, body, sound.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, check out the\u00a0<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grzesina.net\/meditation\/resources\/\">Resources<\/a>\u00a0section for a list of books that I&#8217;ve been perusing for inspiration for these emails.<\/p>\n<p>With best wishes,<br \/>\nAndrea G<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Friends, Here&#8217;s a quick stealth meditation you can do anywhere and any time, from Sharon Salzberg&#8217;s Real Happiness at Work: As you sit down at your desk or work space, spend a few moments just listening to the sounds around you, and note your reactions to them.
