The last step depends on the first. Don&#8217;t think you&#8217;re there just because you see the summit. Watch your footing, be sure of the next step, but don&#8217;t let that distract you from the highest goal. The first step depends on the last.<\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/7216255-keep-your-eye-fixed-on-the-way-to-the-top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Ren\u00e9 Daumal, Mount Analogue (opens in a new tab)\">Ren\u00e9 Daumal, <em>Mount Analogue<\/em><\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As Joseph comments, the last step depends on the first &#8211; we have to take the first steps&#8230; maybe we&#8217;re doing that today&#8230; Starting the year off with meditation and reflection!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That first step also depends upon the last. Joseph says, &#8220;The direction of our journey, the direction of our first steps depends on our understanding of what the last step is. It&#8217;s helpful to have that comprehensive view of the direction that we&#8217;re going in.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re familiar with the many <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"lists in Buddhism (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insightmeditationcenter.org\/books-articles\/dhamma-lists\/\" target=\"_blank\">lists in Buddhism<\/a>, you&#8217;ll notice that equanimity (one translation of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"upekkha (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/dhammawiki.com\/index.php\/Upekkha\" target=\"_blank\">upekkha<\/a>, also translated as equipoise or balance) tends to show up at the end of the lists &#8211; the fourth of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insightmeditationcenter.org\/books-articles\/the-four-faces-of-love-the-brahma-viharas\/\" target=\"_blank\">brahma viharas<\/a>, the seventh of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insightmeditationcenter.org\/books-articles\/the-ordinary-and-the-seven-factors-of-awakening\/\" target=\"_blank\">factors of awakening<\/a>, the tenth <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insightmeditationcenter.org\/books-articles\/theparamis\/\" target=\"_blank\">parami<\/a>, and a characteristic of a higher level of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"concentration (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/dhammawiki.com\/index.php\/9_Jhanas\" target=\"_blank\">concentration<\/a>. As such, equanimity might be seen a &#8220;last step&#8221; that can inform our first steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Reflection<\/em>: What is your understanding of the last step for you?
