{"id":358,"date":"2018-01-18T04:00:07","date_gmt":"2018-01-18T10:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.grzesina.net\/meditation\/?p=358"},"modified":"2022-01-09T22:00:17","modified_gmt":"2022-01-10T04:00:17","slug":"2018-01-18-two-kinds-of-thought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grzesina.net\/meditation\/2018-01-18-two-kinds-of-thought\/","title":{"rendered":"January 18 &#8211; Two kinds of thought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Friends,<\/p>\n<p>Bhante Gunaratana started chapter 8 with a recounting of the <a href=\"https:\/\/suttacentral.net\/en\/mn19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Two Kinds of Thought<\/a> discourse, where the Buddha described a way we can classify and reflect on thoughts:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Suppose I divide my thoughts into two classes. On one side, I set thoughts of sensual desire, ill will, and cruelty. On the other side, I set thoughts of renunciation, loving-friendliness, and compassion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; A thought of sensual desire arose in me. When I considered that this thought leads to my own affliction and the affliction of others, it subsided in me. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Whatever a [meditator] frequently thinks upon, that will become the inclination of his mind.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As Joseph mentions in a <a href=\"https:\/\/beherenownetwork.com\/joseph-goldstein-ep-35-renunciation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">podcast on right though<\/a>t, &#8220;the more we repeat certain patterns of thoughts, the more probable it is that they will arise again.&#8221; He continues, &#8220;thoughts condition actions, and different thoughts and motivations in the mind bring about results.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sylvia Boorstein describes this in another succinct way:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-eXIEfVGz6Uc\/XhEdavsdAHI\/AAAAAAAACxg\/Rzs-LetkvsETjRvPASrHVdf1M3QTw05LACNcBGAsYHQ\/s640\/26%2BOctober%2B2016.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i.pinimg.com\/originals\/7b\/cf\/40\/7bcf40576d9dc4b52de70fdb17aafece.jpg?resize=665%2C665&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The mind is like tofu.
