{"id":1899,"date":"2024-01-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.grzesina.net\/meditation\/?p=1899"},"modified":"2024-01-10T00:39:16","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T06:39:16","slug":"january-10-could-i-speak-to-myself-like-a-friend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grzesina.net\/meditation\/january-10-could-i-speak-to-myself-like-a-friend\/","title":{"rendered":"January 10 &#8211; Could I speak to myself like a friend?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dear Friends,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oren Jay Sofer has previously offered a summer class on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buddhistinquiry.org\/course\/wise-speech-an-introduction-to-mindful-communication-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wise Speech<\/a>, which blends mindfulness and nonviolent communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this summer&#8217;s class, the first week&#8217;s practice suggestions included this reflection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Be mindful of your inner narrative. Are you aware of thinking? How do you speak to yourself? Is it truthful, kind, helpful, and appropriate?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I think there are many of us who speak to ourselves in ways that isn&#8217;t very truthful, kind, helpful, or appropriate. I&#8217;ve noticed that when my inner talk isn&#8217;t skillful, it often bubbles out and affects the way I speak to others too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, as Rosemerry writes in the following poem, &#8220;Change is hard.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Starting Place<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When all my plans have changed<br>and changed again, and then again,<br>I notice the stubborn part of me who<br>rails against change, who wishes plans<br>could go as planned. And I judge her\u2014<br>judge her like I&#8217;m a ruler-smacking teacher<br>who shames children in front of class.<br><em>You should be more resilient<\/em>, I chastise her.<br><em>You should know after fifty-some years<br>you will need to adjust. And these changes<br>are small stuff. What is wrong with you?<br><\/em>And I feel the animal of myself contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If one of my friends were upset about change,<br>I&#8217;d murmur, <em>Oh, darling, that sounds rough.<\/em><br>And with no effort, my voice<br>would unspool in silken thread.<br>Could I speak to myself like a darling, a friend?<br><em>Darlin&#8217;<\/em>, I start, but it comes out a thick sneer,<br>and I add, <em>Oh, so you&#8217;re gonna fail<br>compassionate self-talk, too \u2026 darlin&#8217;?<\/em><br>Begin again. Deep breath. <em>Hey, darling,<br>are you in there?<\/em> And I follow the breath<br>into a softening, my whole body<br>tuning more open, sincere. <em>Yeah, darling<\/em>,<br>my voice is naked now. <em>Change is hard.
