You&#8217;re so upset you&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>a) walk to the nearest mall and buy those pajamas you&#8217;ve been coveting<br \/>\nb) go to the building manager and give him a piece of your mind about the building security<br \/>\nc) feel exhausted and go back to bed<br \/>\nd) worry about what else might go wrong<br \/>\ne) blame yourself<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and after that, you call the police&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Which one of those five might reflect your initial inclination (although not necessarily what you would actually do&#8230;)?<\/p>\n<p>In Sylvia&#8217;s story, each of the reactions corresponds to one of the five hindrances:<\/p>\n<p>a) desire<br \/>\nb) aversion<br \/>\nc) sloth and torpor<br \/>\nd) restlessness (which often manifests as fretting or worrying)<br \/>\ne) doubt (which may be linked to insecurity and self-blame)<\/p>\n<p>Sylvia says we have each of those habitual patterns, but people may find one of the patterns might be more predominant for them than others.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to read more (without getting Sylvia&#8217;s book), here&#8217;s a link PDF from the <em>Shambhala Sun<\/em> magazine that has a version of the story:<br \/>\n<a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lionsroar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SS-128-NOV-14_42-47-Boorstein.pdf\">https:\/\/www.lionsroar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/SS-128-NOV-14_42-47-Boorstein.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As with any difficulty in practice, we can bring RAIN to any hindrances we encounter.
